Today was the easiest day of walking thus far. We walked along a very foot friendly path that ran beside a semi major road. Highlights of the walk itself were watching a motorised hanglider, seeing the sun come up and witnessing the result of over spending on concrete marker bollards (see photo below).
We arrived in Carrion de Los Condes about 12:30 pm and had drinks with a number of other pilgrims we had met. We had booked “a deluxe suite with balcony”, overlooking the main plaza. To our concern when we got there, only one room in the entire establishment seemed to have a balcony. Then to our delight when we booked in, the balcony room was ours. This seemed like the perfect place to spend the night when we made the booking sitting in our comfortable study in Brisbane. We were really chuffed. We even bought a €1:50 bottle of wine to consume on our exclusive balcony. We are fools. The local inhabitants partied in the plaza until 4:00 am, just barely covering the church bells. It was so loud we couldn’t open the door thus we tried to sleep in an oven. A Camino lesson – never, ever book a room that overlooks a very festive Plaza Mayor. First world problem. It didn’t diminish our wonderful experience so far.
The highlight of our night was attending a guitar recital in the Iglesia Santa Maria which has been welcoming pilgrims for 800 years.
Tomorrow we are off to Ledigos, along a stark road that has been described as solitary and lonely and often causes trepidation for pilgrims due to its remoteness.
