Today we covered 33 kilometres in about 3 and a half hours. Riding 20 kilometres of that distance in a taxi certainly helps the equation. We caught a taxi to where we had previously stayed in Villdangos del Páramo for three reasons – Mark’s blisters would not have survived the 33 kilometre distance, the first 20 kilometres outside of León are extremely boring near a major road, and Mark missed a small portion past the 20 kilometre point last year due to illness. The 13 kilometres we did walk were some of the most boring thus far on the Camino and seriously made us wonder why we said “stop” to the driver before our final destination. We are staying in Hospital de Orbigo which is known for a quite magnificent stone bridge. Just like the walk today, the town itself is almost totally devoid of humankind.
As we are writing this we are sitting in a lovely garden bar with chickens pecking the grass around us. The chicken population in Hospital de Orbigo outnumbers the human population by 10 to 1.
Tomorrow we have a leisurely 16 kilometre walk to Astorga. We are blessed, as the weather continues to be magnificent.
