Today we walked 17 kilometres to Astorga. The weather was perfect and the path alternated between a rocky dirt road and walking along busy highways. All up, it was a nice day’s walking although it fell a little short of being terribly memorable. We are staying in the lovely town of Astorga which boasts a chocolate factory, a beautiful cathedral and a house that Gaudi built.

What is simply amazing is that it is a Saturday night and we have NOT booked a balcony room facing Plaza Mayor. This means that we may not have to listen to the locals partying until 5 am in the morning, but we are very close to the cathedral which can only mean bells until the wee hours.

Our bodies are holding up pretty well, although there are a few niggles and hurts. It’s hard to believe that we have been walking  for four weeks. Pilgrim numbers seem to be dropping slightly but  we are sure they will rise again once we reach Sarria.

Tomorrow is a 21 kilometre walk to Rabanal del Camino.

  1. I can’t believe it is 4 weeks already! Astorga is certainly a pretty town. I remember sitting in the square watching the figures on the clock move on the hour. Buen Camino from Yorkshire.
