Today was a beautiful 23 kilometre walk from Alto do Poio to Samos. Much of the walk was along rustic pathways which were part magical and part spooky. The most amazing thing about today was how few other pilgrims we encountered on the trail – probably no more than 4 in total. The alien space ship is obviously back. Our run of perfect weather was kind of almost over – while there were some showers in the afternoon we managed to get to our hotel while there were only a few drops of rain.
Samos is a tiny hamlet nestled in a valley of surrounding hills. Its claim to fame is a very old monastery which is worth a Google. We did a tour of the monastery at a cost of €5. It is a huge building which houses only 5 monks. Apparently many monasteries in Spain have been abandoned, but this one remains open due to funds raised from tours and merchandise sales to pilgrims and tourists. The monastery is very fortunate it is on the Way of St James.
Tomorrow is only a 15 kilometre short walk to Sarria.
