Today was a walk in three parts. We started off in the dark in an amazing sea of fellow pilgrims. It was almost to the stage where you had to line up for a ticket to get onto the path. We are trying very hard to not get annoyed at the “100 kilometre” pilgrims, particularly when they get picked up halfway by their tour bus. It is probably the noise level that is most irksome, and it doesn’t seem right to go on a pilgrimage with a full face of makeup, designer clothes, jewellery and a back pack designed to take one’s small terrier. The other thing of note is how easy, wide and manicured the paths are, which certainly belies what the previous 700 kilometres were like.
We have been enjoying a few gin and tonics with some pilgrims from the Gold Coast, and they were telling the story about groups of very loud school children.
The second part of the day was much more pleasant as the tour buses had whisked their passengers away and we had some beautiful scenery with low lying fog. The final 10 kilometres was undertaken in beautiful walking weather, but somewhat laboriously followed a bitumen road.
We stayed the night in Palas de Rei which was okay without being noteable. We only have a very short walk of 14 kilometres to Melide tomorrow, so we will have a sleep in and a leisurely breakfast. Quite a number of people we started with have now finished and they are already reflecting on how enjoyable the journey was.
