Today we did 22 kms, up and down hills mainly along small country paths. Once again the scenery was very lovely, green pastures interspersed by lovely old buildings. Even though walking up a plentiful supply of hills can be taxing, the top of each hill typically has a rewarding view. We learnt today that small Spanish towns seem ghost like in their nature, with the only sign of life being fellow pilgrims.
The most surprising things do seem to happen on the Camino – you can be walking along some very isolated pathway only to come across an enterprising local selling cold drinks and fruit from an esky.
We are currently in Pamplona, in the beautiful old part of the town. Just spent an enjoyable half hour comparing the cost of living, education and health care with a Dutch pilgrim.
We are staying at Hostal Arriazu, which is boutique hotel in the middle of the old town, costing only €49 per night. One thing we did learn about Spanish culture today – a Spanish “hot chocolate” is more like a dessert.
