We learnt something very important last night – never stay at a hotel near a church. The bells chimed every 15 minutes all night long. The locals must be used to it but for us sleep deprived, tired pilgrims it was something short of heavenly.
Today was a very pleasant walk, particularly as we walked through the iconic medieval town of Cirauquiu, which sits strikingly upon a hill top. Another highlight of the day was seeing the grape vines laden with fruit. Last year we saw many storks building nests on church steeples, whereas this year the swallows are furiously building mud nests.
The actual walk today was quite patchy, alternating between flat rustic paths and steep inclines and declines.
We are staying at Hotel Yerri in Estella, which is about a kilometre off the Camino path. It doesn’t sound much, but walking an unnecessary kilometre messes with your psyche. The hotel itself is very comfortable with a bar and restaurant below. Tomorrow we have a 30 kilometre walk to Torres del Rio.
